TOMASZ KRĘCICKI

Tomasz Kręcicki joined us on the project in May 2022. Kręcicki’s work plays with mundanity, manipulating scale and perspective to create absurd reimaginings of the everyday. Referencing the dramaticism of cinema, every object within the paintings is active, and every moment is purposeful; a water glass becomes a spying device, and opening the blinds becomes a poetic act. Many of the works made on the residency reference time, with the reappearing motif of the luminescent alarm clock. Sleeplessness becomes apparent in these works, carrying the strangeness of being awake when everyone else is asleep, on the cusp of dreaming and wakefulness. In these paintings this strangeness is amplified by almost-impossible happenings, a tower of pills perfectly balanced on a big toe. In Earth, Soil, 2022 the world is a seed, plunged into the ground by large, disembodied fingers, and yet it is still the earth, so the ground simultaneously becomes a canyon, and the fingers recklessly large. The artist manipulates our understanding of reality, turning expectation on its head, and leaving the viewer to second guess everything they see.
