ROSS CALIENDO

Ross Caliendo joined us on the project in June 2022. Caliendo’s understanding of colour is exceptional, layers of carefully selected contrasting colours are applied and carved from the surface in a sgraffito process, to reveal and conceal the underpainting. Working from photographs found on social media or collected from Caliendo’s own travels as a base, the works carry a voyeuristic element to them. A window into a private moment between viewer and nature, this feeling is amplified in the pieces made on the project by their smaller scale. In Poison, 2022, a single apple hangs from a branch. Caliendo's decision to draw attention to it through its painting makes it appear perfectly placed, framed by its’ surrounding leaves. In Green Creek, 2022 Caliendo deviated from his usual palette, to focus on a more naturalist scene. The result borders on unreal, the heavily saturated green of the creek balanced by the surrounding earthy tones. The works teeter on the edge of abstraction, finished with handmade wooden frames that mirror the artist's use of colour.
