KAROLINA JABŁOŃSKA

Joining us on the project in September 2022, Karolina Jabłońska continued her investigative paintings into complex human emotions. Utilising a caricature of herself, Jabłońska takes a comedic approach to complicated and unsettling feelings. In this recent series, Jabłońska comments on intrusive thoughts and the inevitability of fate. “Putting Hands in the Soup” depicts Jabłońska moments before thrusting her hands into boiling soup, already reddening from the steam. L'appel du vide, a French term meaning The Call of the Void, refers to the inexplicable desire to act on intrusive thoughts. For Jabłońska, there is an inevitability to these thoughts, rather than sit in suspense waiting for something to happen, the paintings act and regain control over their fate. Unsettling, yet entrancing, Jabłońska's paintings utilise dark humour to provide levity to the heavy reality they face.
