BOBBY DOWLER

Bobby Dowler joined us on the project in July 2022. To Dowler, a self-professed collector of materials, one artist's trash is another artist's treasure. Making use of discarded stretcher bars and abandoned works, Dowler constructs ‘art objects’ sitting on the border of sculpture and painting. Diverting slightly from this during his time on the residency, Dowler allowed himself to select pre-made canvases for some of the works. This gave him the freedom to focus on colour and scale creating three large works, each constructed of six separate parts. Dowler’s works refuse the traditional constraints of painting, his smaller ‘art objects’ made on the residency experimenting with overturned canvases, cut-out and layered paintings.
