BETTY LEUNG

Leung is a multidisciplinary artist interested in human behaviour. Her research is concerned with social constructs, particularly identity and economic models,  including capitalism, its alternatives and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) within the current model and its implications.

Leung uses an AI style transfer tool called DeepArt, which combines two different images to create a third hybrid image. She uses this tool to explore influence and bias, chance and control. By using this algorithm, she is actively acknowledging that there are processes that she doesn't understand and or/biases that she is not aware of.

Through her use of materials Leung seeks to explore ideas associated with domesticity and migrant labour, fused with an image and process developed by a primarily white male dominated industry. Particularly in the current context, where the domestic space has become a new centre of production.

The 2D images are turned into 3D sculptures as reference to the embodied experience. The fabric is used to create malleable sculptures and modular installation pieces. Twisting and tactile, with endless permutations, each piece embodies fragments of her own identity, including the migration experience.
